NEW BEDFORD, Mass.—A New Bedford man was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation after he was charged in the attempted abduction of a 19-year-old Fairhaven woman.

Stephen Wilson, 26, was arraigned in New Bedford District Court on Thursday and was charged with kidnapping, assault and battery and assault with intent to rape.

Police said Wilson was arrested at his home Wednesday night after calling 911 and turning himself in.

Investigators said Wilson assaulted the woman on the Fairhaven Bike Path near Egypt Lane.

Police said the victim escaped by fighting off Wilson and screaming for help.
