PROVIDENCE - State officials are closing two decayed timber bridges in rural Rhode Island.
The state Department of Transportation announced the closings Thursday. Recent inspections found deterioration in the bridges, which both have timber supports.
One of the bridges is in the South County village of Wyoming and carries traffic over the Wood River. It is closing Thursday and should be reopened in two years after repairs using $2.3 million from the federal stimulus package. The bridge was built in 1932 and reenovated in 1960.
The Arnold Mills Bridge spans a stream in Cumberland. It closes Friday and has no timeline for repairs. It was built in 1886 and reconstructed in 1985.
