PROVIDENCE—Health officials have recommended closing 12 Rhode Island beaches due to high bacteria counts.
The Department of Health said Thursday that beaches in Barrington, Bristol, North Kingstown, Warwick and several others aren’t safe for swimming.

Officials say the large amount of rainfall in Rhode Island over the last few days caused the high number of closures.
Camp Canonicus in Exeter and Conimicut Point Beach in Warwick remain closed.
The department is monitoring water quality at closed beaches and will announce when the water is safe.
