PROVIDENCE - Gov. Don Carcieri said Rhode Island’s unemployment rate in May topped 12 percent.
The governor made the announcement Thursday at the annual Governor’s Workforce Board meeting in Cranston. His remarks were first reported by The Providence Journal.
The official state joblessness report will be released Friday. Rhode Island’s unemployment rate was 11.1 percent in April.
The unemployment rate in Massachusetts climbed to 8.2 percent in May even as the state added 4,900 jobs, the first increase in jobs in a year.
The biggest increase came in the professional, scientific and business services sectors. The education, health services, and leisure and hospitality sectors also posted gains.
The largest monthly declines occurred in the construction and government sectors.
At 3.12 million, the number of jobs in Massachusetts is down 3.4 percent from a year ago.
The state is still doing slightly better than the country as a whole.
The national unemployment rate reached a 25-year high of 9.4 percent in May.

All Carcieri seems to know how to do is complain, go on Dan Yorke, and state the obvious.
He should be a reporter not a governor.
Buddy would make a great governor, its too bad. Id like to see who he would recommend though.
Why ?
Rhode Island the crookedest little state in the union .

Look at the interactive state by state unemployment chart and please tell me why we are the worst in New England.
Obama Expanding Government Shrinking Freedom….we are all screwed.
Keep electing those democratic idiots to the general assembly and we’ll have 50% unemployment. The govenor has tried his best but can’t get anything done with the GA spening money like water. Keep voting Democrat and we’ll soon be taken over by the Socialist in the White House.
If I was a FRIEND of DON C. or DAVID C. would I have a JOB? JUDGE for yourselves.
Pick your Tax, we pay on average 54%.
Pick your timeline, 2 years.
You don’t Pay…You have NO Say!
So ASK Y, if you are out of work, you lose your right to vote?
Not a good idea.
Snobdr
This is RI. We work to serve the politicians. They don’t work to serve the people.
Only people that pay taxes should be allowed to vote. Then we would have change we can believe…Obama would not like that!
They don’t plan to do ANYTHING. If you notice, if you were laid off AFTER Sept 1 of 08, you can get extended benefits. But if you were before that date, you get nothing.
And you are basically ineligible for any other government benefits if you have any money in the bank or a car worth more than $3k.
You worked for years, paid your taxes and when you need it, you get nothing.
