Fuel truck crash shuts down Mass. interstate

NEWBURYPORT, Mass.—A tanker truck carrying more than 10,000 gallons of gasoline rolled on its side during a crash in Newburyport that sent 10 people to the hospital and closed both directions of Interstate 95 for hours.

Later Monday, state police said an accident toppled an electric pole onto the highway about 25 miles south, closing Interstate 95/Route 128 at Route 1.

In the earlier crash, state police said an SUV collided with the tanker in the northbound lanes just before the Route 113 exit about 9:15 a.m. Monday. The tanker, owned by Aranco Oil of Concord, N.H.,
then slid on its side and hit two other vehicles.

Southbound lanes reopened at 3:25 p.m., while two northbound lanes reopened about an hour later.

A neighborhood was evacuated and nearby public water wells shut down as a precaution.
