Firefighters suspended for going home sick
Published: October 22, 2009
NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Two North Providence firefighters face suspensions for allegedly taking sick days to protest their work assignments.
Mayor Charles Lombardi said the two firefighters were already at work at their station, but went home sick after being ordered to work at other locations in the city that day because their ladder truck was under repair.
Lombardi referred to the Sept. 29 incident as a “mini-walkout, mini-sickout.“ He said the fire department was forced to call in two other firefighters on overtime because of minimum staffing requirements.
The mayor did not identify the firefighters, who had a disciplinary hearing on Tuesday. The length of the suspensions have not been determined.

I personally have nothing against a fireman sitting at a firehouse for days without a call. It only takes one fire to seriously hurt someone. If they were volunteers who had to leave where there are to run to station to get a truck that is a lot of time wasted my house could burn down by then. I do have a problem with these two smucks who are acting like babies. It’s guys like them who give everyone else a bad name. I hope if they get suspended it’s without pay. Police & Fireman are much needed the unions are not. As far as teachers go they don’t need a union either. Like the old saying goes OLD Habits die hard. Changes need to be made but everyone seems to be afraid to take the steps to do it.
Yes something slipped indeed. Must be the grease on my fingers from my salami sandwich I bought. Ethnic profiling? How do you hacks get on this thing? I support and defend North Providence public safety and suddenly I drink beer and eat salami sandwiches? Why don’t you just call me a whop? How about a lush?
I stated “union busting is fine until your house is burning down”. In other words harrass and defame (a.k.a. UNION BUSTING) firefighters and paint them in a bad light until they are needed, then its all smiles, sunshine, and pats on the back. If this was an issue with a non union department I would have used a term that describes that faction best.
AGAIN, you just want to find your 15 minutes of fame, so go sit infront of your TV, watching for a Little Caesar (Lombardi) sighting, because apparently you have nothing better to do to pick apart comments and reform them to best satisfy your craving for attention.
Oh and by the way your comment about “So who put out house fires over 50 yrs ago before there were union firefighters?“ Nice try to fan that flame. Not biting.
spencerjames: It was a slip of the index finger as lori suggested in her post.
You don’t understand my post: I have nothing against firefighters, or police. But it was you that suggested only union firefighters can put out house fires. So who put out house fires over 50 yrs ago before there were union firefighters???
ANS: FIREFIGHTERS
I have a bigger problem with public school teachers unions. No one can seem to answer this question: WHY DO WE NEED TEACHERS UNIONS? Are the schools UNSAFE? Not the last time I was in one!! The kids seem safe to me!!
You wanted to focus on my typo to dodge the issue…..people like you don’t fool anyone. Go back to your salami sub and beer.
spencer. i am sooooo with you on your post. except it really wasn’t grammatical just a typo unfortunately just a type. Index finger must have slipped uh?
RISTINKS: Ok fine you didnt understand my comment. But let me understand this, you are of the opinion that firefighters must need less of an education. So I paste this quote direct from your posting.
“You must be a firefighter of have a 9th grade education.“
“of have”? “of have”? No seriously, you just post to have your 15 seconds of fame. Apparently you couldn’t be a firefighter according to your HIGH grammatical standards.
Unless you’ve done the job…SHUT UP.
pithy, LOL. A Bill O’Reilly fan.
Can anyone answer this question!!!!
WHY DO TEACHERS NEED TO BE UNIONIZED??
anyone….please be pithy!!
So you no longer support your king?
oh stop! lmao ![]()
Freak,
I just changed my mind on October 22, 2009 at 11:43 am when Lori posted her “Lucky enough” comment.
