BRISTOL, R.I.—A Bristol elementary school teacher was arrested Monday morning and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.
Kathleen Borgia, a second-grade teacher at Colt Andrews Elementary School, was arraigned in Providence District Court. She pleaded not guilty and was released on $10,000 bail with surety.
In 2008, the Bristol-Warren school committee voted to fire Borgia for a series of alcohol and domestic abuse incidents. However she was reinstated this year over parents’ objections after union arbitration.
Susan Slusarski’s son is in Borgia’s class.
“I’ll do what I have to do to get him out of there. I did meet her a couple of days ago and she seemed to be a nice lady and very nice to my son, but certainly (the charges) are unacceptable. That tells me she’s going to school intoxicated and I’m not going to let that happen,“ she said.
According to a report published in the Bristol Phoenix, Borgia was reprimanded by the district in 2005 for being under the influence of alcohol during school.
She’s scheduled to be back in court on Oct. 9 on a probation violation.

it is the same as at RIH…the union is protecting the people who should CLEARLY not be working at said institution. Let me tell you first hand if I came into RIH and had to have an exam done I woudl surely be asking myself is this person is qualified!
Too many people are not qualified to be doing what they are doing but the union is protecting them. UNION is bunk! and definitly promotes most of the problems I see here in RI as a whole.

Let me guess, she is suspended with pay.
Unions don’t care about what’s right. They don’t care about safety or children being taught by someone who’s drunk. It’s about their membership and how they protect the wrong people. Why do these people have so much power? People’s lives are in danger and they don’t care. Thank your school committee. Kids don’t vote or pay taxes.

OMG She’s a mess…charged 3 times with domestic assault, violation of a protective oder, probabtion violation hearings, now DUI??? WHAT?????
Some of this girl’s past unlawful behaviors are on line ... I just checked it out. She not only is an alcoholic, but a violent one. She has arrests for violation of a protective order recently, too. She should be far, far away from young children! How can anyone with a conscience let this happen!!!!!
This proves that unions are becoming very, very dangerous.
This lady is a loser, I am sure there are plently of nice young teachers graduating college that would love to have her job and would do it sober as well. Get rid of her and while your at it get rid of all these ridiculous unions, pathetic.
What is it with these school committees? Re-instated?
We had the same problem i North Kingstown with a teacher. DUI convictions (charged 2X in 6 weeks!!!) as well as domestic charges and resisting charges that including spitting at a police officer yet our fabulous school committee refused to get rid of her. She is still in the classroom.
