East Providence official disputes reasons for firing
Published: July 23, 2009
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A longtime East Providence building safety official has been fired for what city officials call “egregious insubordinate behavior.“
But Albert Quattrucci says he was fired this week because he ordered the closure of East Providence High School against the wishes of school department officials.
Quattrucci told The Providence Journal the school is unsafe, even calling it a “deathtrap.“ He said he’s only thinking about the safety of students.
Superintendent Mario Cirillo said while there are some issues with the school that are being addressed, Quattrucci’s claims are an exaggeration.
City Manager Richard Brown said Quattrucci has a history of disregarding his superiors.

Since when is the school superintendent a qualified building official? I am a contractor an I know Al Q. is competent and cares about safety. Sounds to me politics in east prov comes before safety which is absolutely pathetic. If Al is correct about any work being done at the high school being substandard, against code, and politics were “pushing their weight” to get him to turn the other cheek and go with the flow to save money “disregarding his superiors” I hope those responsible for his firing are held accountable for sacrificing the safety of students. I appreciate Al’s stance that even gov’t has to stand up to code requirements (which east prov obviously does not want to do), his firing seems completely related to exactly what he was originally hired to do, keeping us safe. Power breeds corruption…same ole story in RI!
