East Providence agrees to bring back officers

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Thirteen East Providence police officers laid off last month may be back on the job later this week.

City officials and union representatives have reached an agreement that brings the officers back in exchange for several concessions and contract modifications that will save the same amount - about $900,000 - the city was projected to save by laying off the officers.

Union president John Rossi told The Providence Journal the deal is “fair and equitable.“

Councilor Robert Cusack said he appreciates the union’s efforts.

The union agreed to give up the next six holidays and agreed to give up their annual uniform payments for two years.

The deal needs the approval of the City Council at Tuesday night’s meeting.

I seem to remember a previous story that stated the East Providence Union had a proposal that would save the City something like $1.2million, and the City was only seeking a $900,000 savings. The Union went above and beyond what the City needed, but they still chose to lay off the police officers. Now there is public outrage about the loss of the police, and the city council is blaming the city manager… so all of a sudden the manager agrees to a deal to bring the police officers back… if he agreed to the first one there would have been additional savings… now he only got the bare minimum of what was needed… gotta love politics!

It’s nice to see a union willing to give a little for the good of all.  This is a refreshing change.
