PROVIDENCE—Commuters who head north on Interstate 95 into Providence are bracing for major backups as a new traffic pattern is put in place.
Beginning Tuesday, crews will be dividing the highway, so that anyone seeking to get off on Broadway at Exit 21 must be in the right lane earlier than before.
The two left lanes will not rejoin the third lane until after Exit 21, and will be separated by barrels and a Jersey barrier.
Transportation officials say drivers should plan ahead, expect congestion and use alternate routes when possible.
There will be signs alerting motorists to the changes.
The work was initially supposed to start Sunday, but was postponed because of a forecast of rain.

Well thank you Smitty for the compliment, you are very thoughtful!
I bet you never complain about anything. Everyone must love you.
.....so will iliotic bloggers.
Traffic slowdowns on Rte. 195 that are so common today.
You’ve picked your name well!
“and the traffic slowdowns will be gone.“ and there will be no more crime, no more curruption, we all will be living in a perfect world, says smitty
I can see where this is going—it is to stop the idiots that exit 195 onto 95 north from cutting across the slowed traffic for Broadway—and fowling up traffic flow on 95 north. It’s about time something was done there! It’ll be in place for a couple of months and then the new 195 exit onto 95 north will open, and the traffic slowdowns will be gone.
Just when I started to get used to being stuck on I-195 West at the State Line, now I can assume the delays will start in Swansea. The traffic engineers in RI are obviously clueless about traffic flow. Whatever effects 95 N in the city inevitably effects 195 W but worse.
