DARTMOUTH, Mass.—A 25-year-old driver from Acushnet accused of running over a duck faces possible animal cruelty charges.
Police said surveillance video shows the driver striking the mother duck Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of the Dartmouth Mall.
Police said the driver did not stop and that he was seen laughing after striking the mother duck.
The driver said it was an accident and that he didn’t see the ducks until it was too late. Police said the man told them he left the scene to avoid a confrontation with angy witnesses.
The driver’s name has not been released becuase he has not yet been charged.
The 12 orphaned ducklings are being cared for at a rehabilitation center until they can be released into the wild.
The town’s animal control officer, Cheryl Jackson, is familiar with the mother mallard. She said the walk through the mall parking lot is an annual migratory trek.
“She has her babies out in the woods in a nice secluded area where nothing can get to her. When they’re large enough, she walks them across the parking lot, across Route 6 in front of Friendly’s, and into the stream in the back,“ Jackson said.
The mother and her ducklings had a close call one year. The babies fell through a storm grate and had to be rescued.

If it’s confirmed that this poor excuse for a human being laughed after he ran over the mother duck crossing with her ducklings, he’s one cold hearted SOB. Ooooh, can’t wait until his name is released, not wishing him the kind of bodily harm some have suggested (a knockout punch from a real man sounds good though), but I like the idea of him being ordered to do community service at an animal shelter. It’s just hard to fathom that kind of heartlessness..so senseless, even ppl that aren’t animal lovers shake their heads. I remember a few years ago some guy that killed a momma swan cuz it snapped at him made the news. She was just following instinct in protecting her gooslings..but these p*ss poor excuses for humans aren’t men, so having a hissy fit and killing 10-12 lb bird (this guy actually said it was self defense) in a fit of childish rage is somehow justified in their warped little minds. Once his name (and hopefully face) is out there, let the shame begin!
You are so right Sasha it does happen every day and he had oui’s before that so it is like i said they let him right back out there our roads to do just what he did KILL someone.
That druck a$$hole who killed that woman didn’t do it on purpose with a smile. And, although it’s a shame, most people are numb to hearing cases like that. Happens every day.
While I agree this was a horrible act, a mother of 6 from Foster was killed just several weeks ago because a drunk driver crossed the line and hit her. Where is the same outrage for the loss of her life and the family she’s left behind?
What an a$$hole. He should get the crap beatin out of him. I hate animal abusers and think they should be tortured.
I will bet this is not the first time that this man has run afowl of the law. I am just not down with this. I think he should be billed for all medical costs. but I will bet you that he ducks out of paying for this.
He should have his name published and let people know just what a creep he is. You might think he would have some sense at the age of 25.

I’m sorry there is no excuse for what he did. And there are laws in place for animal cruelty and guess what it cost tax payers money to put that law into place but once again nothing happens to them. What about the guy to beat the puppy this past week. Only a slap on the hand. Someone wrote only in America well only in America does the justice system let murderers out, child molesters out, etc. need I go on. This punk ought to pay for killing something that wasn’t doing anything wrong but walking her babies.
