Dozens pay tribute to Mass. state trooper

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.—Dozens of state police officers and mourners have paid tribute to a state police captain who died in a car crash while on duty.

The wake for Capt. Richard Cashin was held at Sacred Heart Church in Haverhill’s Bradford section Sunday. A law enforcement walk-by also paid tribute to the 52-year-old overnight shift commander of Danvers-based Troop A.

Private funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart.

Officials have warned parents Haverhill public school buses may be delayed because of the services.

The 28-year veteran and father of four died when the unmarked Ford Crown Victoria cruiser he was driving struck a utility pole on Route 1 north in Saugus about 1:45 a.m. Wednesday.

The accident is under investigation.
