The Rhode Island Department of Transportation said Friday it will permanently close an on-ramp to the Sakonnet River Bridge.

The on-ramp from Central Avenue in Tiverton to Route 24 south will close Monday.

The DOT said drivers can use Main Road to a newly reconstructed bridge and intersection to reach Route 24 south.

The state permanently closed the Central Avenue off-ramp from Route 24 north on March 25.

Both Central Avenue ramps are slated for demolition this year.

The closures are part of preparation work for a new Sakonnet River Bridge that is expected to open in 2012.
