JOHNSTON, R.I.—The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is offering a $1,000 reward in a dog abandonment case.

An 8- to 10-year-old corgi mix was found along Hartford Avenue in Johnston on Monday night.

A witness said the dog was pushed or let out of a car that sped away on Route 6.

The dog was unable to get up because of severe arthritis.

“For the life of me, I can’t imagine why a person would do something like this,“ said RISPCA veterinarian E.J. Finocchio.

The dog—now called Gypsy—wasn’t wearing a tag and she doesn’t have a tracking chip. She’s being cared for at the RISPCA in East Providence.

Abandoning a maimed, sick or infirm animal is against the law in Rhode Island. If caught, the dog’s owner faces a fine of $500 and 11 months in jail.

“There is no question in my mind that this is willful intent,“ Finocchio said. “The person knew this dog’s condition.“

A $1,000 reward will be given for information that leads to an arrest and conviction of the dog’s owner.

Anyone with information is asked to call the RISPCA at 401-438-8150.

Have they found the people who did this yet?

uuugh….as the owner of 4 dogs myself, this story certainly sickens me! I’ve had one of my dogs torn ACL’s repaired at the cost of just over $2500.00, and my oldest dog Jazz, (she’s 13) just got over a bout with lyme disease…the poor little thing almost died, we thought she wasn’t going to make it, but with a quick response from me to get her to the Vet ASAP and the swift attention to her, she survived (another $1300.00 bucks when all was said and done)...now she runs around the yard like a greyhound!!  Thank god!  My motto is, if you can’t afford to pay for these animals, you have no right to own one! They are just like kids and need medical care just the same! I feel bad for poor Gypsy!

And as far as the poster who said that she’s safe at a “no kill” shelter…that is a bit false because I went to the RISPCA in E Providence earlier this year so my daughter could adopt a dog, and my daughter fell in love with a female brindle pitbull and the lady at the front desk said that unfortunately she was not adoptable because she was deemed to be too unpredictable and they were euthanizing her! That really made me sad! Poor little thing, RIP!

There’s got to be a neighbor or relative that has seen this dog and the owner’s black sedan.  I hope that neighbor or relative comes forward and does what’s right so this idiot can be punished.

Maybe they should drop off the person who did this to their dog the same way.  Leave them on the road, blindfolded, handcuffed in the dead of winter.  Boy am I sadistic after reading that story!!  I hope they catch the SOB and soon!!!

Sad…looks like a sweet dog, I hope they find the scumball who did this to a crippled dog…at least someone saw what happened and the dog is getting good care at a no kill shelter.

How can you look at that face and do this to her. Please if anyone knows who owned her report this person or persons. They need to pay for this. She looks so sweet. She deserves to live her life out in comfort not possibly getting hit by a car.

This is so disturbing! I hope they catch the heartless person who did this. I’ve posted the video on my Facebook page and have sent out an alert to all of my friends… I’m sure they’ll pass along the alert to all of their friends as well. Rhode Island is a small state - Whoever did this is bound to be caught! My heart goes out to Gypsy -

Someone out here has to know who owned her - been to the house seen her in the persons yard whatever. Please if you do report this person. I so hope they catch this SOB and give him the max of whatever charges they can. Like you prance I have an 8 yr old shepherd with bad hips. Right now he is laying on my couch. I just don’t understand how you can have an animal in your family for that long then just dump them like they are a piece of trash. Like you said many thanks to the woman who made the call. She could have looked the other way. SOB if you are reading this I hope they catch you and put you in jail.
