DMV increasing fees
PROVIDENCE—The Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles wants to remind drivers about an increase in fees that begins on May 18.
License reinstatement fees will increase from $76.50 to $151.50, while license reinstatement for DUI or refusal to submit to a chemical test will increase from $76.50 to $351.50.
Registration or license plate reinstatement fees will increase from $51.50 to $251.50.
The increases are based on legislation passed by the Rhode Island General Assembly.
All reinstatement fees must be paid by cash, check or money order in person or by mail.

Yes. Poor us. More incentive to drive responsibly and NOT lose our privilege to drive in the first place. How about instead of complaining about the fee increases, we take a moment and reflect on the need to drive 50 in a 25. Or the need to drive home after consuming too much alcohol and putting folks’ lives in danger. God forbid we change our bad habits and make our roads safer.
Or maybe readers didn’t read carefully and don’t understand that they are REINSTATEMENT fees as opposed to RENEWAL fees. I think some of us are a little too eager to jump the gun and whine about stuff we don’t understand.
This is nothing we should expect more of the same from the general assembly after all they are collecting money for the Cause !
Cause they want your Money !
Why not impose an illegal immigrant fee charging all illegal immigrants 3,000 a year to live in the ocean state ?
How about a public servant fee that charges all state and town employee’s 3,000 a year for having an overpaid Government or Town job this would include school teachers and fire department workers after all they are among the highest paid people in the state !
We all know these jobs are over paid in the private sector they would not make this much money ! FACT !
The Government has seen fit to send private sector high paying factory jobs over seas and yet wants more money for ever increasing pays of public servants ? Just say no !

Last June my mom gave me her car along with the plates. When I registered it they said she had a $30 refund coming. She just received the check in February of this year so don’t hold your breath while waiting for this refund.
I think that people, no matter what they want to write, should have to use spell check before they can post it. There is nothing that negates an opinion faster than misspellings in a post and not knowing the difference between simple words like we’re and were. And in this day and age of computers and spell check, there is no reason to have to read a comment like Peter’s.
If you read the article, it clearly states “REINSTATMENT” fees. So if you have your license and/or registration suspended for what ever reason, that’s when you pay the higher fees. It doesn’t say anything about “RENEWALS”. So, maybe people should read the article a couple of times if needed to understand it BEFORE they fly off the handle with some lame-a55 comments thinking the sky is falling and OMG the sh1t-bags that have a suspened license or reg has to pay more. They should!!
this is the biggist rip off yet perpatrated by this state !thay should be asshamed !iN THIS DAY AN AGE OF COMPUTERS IT SHOULD COST LESS TO RUN THE REGISTRY NOT MORE !!!!How can thay justify this .thing’s are tough enough without raising fee’s this high dubble. come on !THE REVALOTION IS COMMING!And were comming after you political pee on’s first .WE’ll be comming right to your house’s to take back what youv’e takin from us. so sit at home and enjoy it now .Because i can’t wait to drag you out into the street while you scream for forgivness !!!!!!!
Joyce, I had the same issue with a refund. Don’t be surprised if you don’t get your full $90 back either. I was also owed $90 for a plate return and about 5 months later got a check for $60.
Where is my check for $90.00?
I submitted my license plate back to RI in February, because I now register my car in Florida. I sent it certified mail and was told by other people here in florida to expect to wait 4 months for the refund. What seems to be the problem with just mailing a simple refund check? Now the state of RI wants more money to pay for all the pensions. So glad I got out of that lousy state that I lived in for 64 years!!!!!
