DLT accepts extended benefits claims online

The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training said Thursday that unemployed residents can now file for extended state and federal benefits online.

Until now, the state would accept only claims for regular insurance benefits through its Web site.

The DLT used a $140,000 federal grant to upgrade its computer systems to accept all claims.

Claims can be filed on the DLT Web site 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The department offers three separate unemployment benefit programs to eligible job seekers: regular unemployment insurance; state extended benefits; and federal extended benefits, also known as the Federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation program.

The programs allow a maximum of 79 weeks of unemployment benefits.

DLT officials said the new online claims process should result in a decrease in the number of people trying to reach a call center.
