Debt, repairs threaten Portuguese congregation’s future

What’s believed to be the oldest Portuguese Catholic congregation in the United States could shut down in 2011 if its debt is not paid and repairs to the church building are not made.

The Standard-Times reported that St. John the Baptist Parish on County Street in New Bedford needs to increase membership and its Mass attendance to keep the Fall River Diocese from shutting it down.

Dedicated in 1913, St. John is about $190,000 in debt. The building needs at least $1.4 million in repairs.
