CRANSTON, R.I.— A judge on Monday set bail at $25,000 for a man accused of abusing a 6-year-old Cranston boy, who later died.

Michael Patino, 27, of Central Falls, was arraigned on charges of child abuse causing serious injury and battery by an adult on a child.  Patino did not enter a plea and he was ordered to have no contact with the family of the boy,

Cranston police responded at about 6 a.m. Sunday to the Riverbend apartments on Dyer Avenue, where they found 6-year-old Marco Nieves unresponsive.  The boy was pronounced dead at Hasbo Children’s Hospital.

Investigators said they would not comment on what happened to the boy until they receive the medical examiner’s report.

Family members said Patino was the boyfriend of the mother.

“I never heard either one of them raise their voice to Marco,“ said Roxann Beeman, a Riverbend resident. “This is just a devastating thing that everybody at Riverbend can’t believe because they just seemed like a very happy couple.“

Patino had not posted bail as of Monday evening.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I agreed that this is a truly heinous crime, but the death penalty is little more than revenge killing.  The small possibility we could execute a person who is innocent of the crime they were charged with makes the death penalty a dangerous idea.  That said, set him free in the general population of fellow inmates and stand back.

Yet another reason for the Death Penalty in this State!  I’d be glad to flip the switch or pull the trigger on this pathetic excuse for a human being.  I wait for the heartwarming story of how he gets what he deserves from the other inmates!

I couldn’t get much done today. I don’t know how I feel.  When someone explained to me how there should be no death penalty because a civilized nation doesn’t kill there own I felt agreeable to that. I don’t think I do anymore.

I have to think about how I felt 12 years ago….what fantasies I thought about to fall asleep.  Maybe I was in an airplane flying over the ocean or in a submarine beneath it. I sprang out of bed and couldn’t wait for my day to start. I was loved. Thank you Mom, and Dad.

Did this little boy think any different than me? Our world has gotten so big this will go un-noticed. It’s happening right now in this country somewhere and we will never know.

Something like this goes beyond murder. This is a crime of passion and anger toward a person that just learned to tie his shoe.

Take revenge out of this equation and replace it with how to deter this from happening again. Are we a civilized nation? A trial then if found guilty swift immediate execution , publicized. I feel sick in my heart saying this, but how do we stop this? Can anyone help me think past this solution?

There is a hierarchy among prisoners.  Pedophiles and child abusers are on the bottom rung of the ladder because many of the prisoners are also parents.

Sorry I should rephrase that…the child abuse and “felony” assault is obviously what led up to this little boys death!!

These stories really tug at my heart…I agree with the “let him have it”...This Michael Patino guy is not going to be very liked at the local prison!! Thats for sure!

I know, I understand that…but what I don’t understand is…what are the child abuse charges and felony assault charges all about?? It is obviously what killed this poor little boy!

Chrissic, unfortunately, until the coroner releases the cause and manner of death, he can’t be charged that way.  After that….let him have it!
