HARTFORD, Conn.—The last Republican in the U.S. House from New England lost his bid for re-election Tuesday.
Christopher Shays was defeated by Democrat Jim Himes, a former Goldman Sachs vice president who now runs Northeast operations at Enterprise Community Partners, an affordable housing operation.
Shays was seeking his 11th term from the wealthy Fairfield County district in southwest Connecticut.
Himes’ win could give Connecticut an all-Democratic House delegation. Three Connecticut Democrats easily won re-election.
Joseph Courtney, who won his first term in 2006 by 83 votes, beat Republican Sean Sullivan, a former submarine commander in the 2nd District, which covers the eastern half of the state.
U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro of New Haven won a 10th term in Connecticut’s 3rd District by defeating Republican Bo ItsHaky of Bethany.
U.S. Rep. John Larson of East Hartford garnered his sixth term in Congress over Republican Joseph Visconti in the 1st District.
The calls were based on an analysis of voter interviews, conducted for The AP by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.
Freshman Democratic Chris Murphy, who defeated long-time 5th District Representative Nancy Johnson in 2006, was leading Republican state Senator David Cappiello, 54 percent to 44 percent with 17 percent of votes counted.
