WOONSOCKET, R.I.—The Woonsocket city council is considering an ordinance that would impose a supplemental tax that could go into effect as early as May.

Under the proposal residents would be taxed and additional $1.37 per $1,000 of their property’s assessed value, a 10 percent increase.

The rate for commercial property owners would increase by $3.31.

The city council said the tax hike is designed to make up for a school department deficit of nearly $4 million.

NBC 10’s Mario Hilario reports.
