CRANSTON, R.I. - The public pool in Cranston may have to close this summer as the city tries to close a multimillion-dollar budget deficit.
Mayor Allan Fung also told The Providence Journal that the city will leave intact its recreation programs but will not hire teenage workers to help the Highway, Recreation and Maintenance departments.
The city is trying to close a potentially $6 million budget deficit.
The Budlong Pool costs about $200,000 to open for the summer. If the city decides to reopen the pool, it will raise the price of daily passes for residents and non-residents.
It would also increase the costs of seasonal passes for non-residents.

I have very fond memories of my mother taking me to the pool in Cranston. We always looked forward to going on a hot summer day. It’a a shame the young children will not be able to experience the pool this summer. There must be something else that could be cut. Why do the children have to suffer and the teenagers who might be employed in a summer job also suffer?
Why are we looking at something so small as $200,000.00???? Cut something bigger….The deficit is so big. Don’t punish the CHILDREN!!!!!!!
“Cranston” public pool, right? “Cranston” tax-payer $ operate the pool, right? Then for “Cranston” residents raise the price. Double it if you have to. For those non-Cranston residence…double, triple, quadruple admission. Whatever it takes to keep it running, people will pay.
That’s great Mayor…..you take away something that the area families and children can enjoy together. Where do the kids go now?
That is too bad, but times are tough.
