NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I.—A high-ranking North Providence firefighter accused of falsifying his overtime has been suspended without pay.
Town officials announced Monday that Battalion Chief David Charello has been suspended pending the outcome of his case on charges of obtaining more than $500 under false pretenses, and two counts of using a computer to obtain money under false pretenses.
Charello was placed on paid administrative leave at the time of his arrest two weeks ago. He is free on personal recognizance.
Mayor Charles Lombardi said Charello is presumed innocent but that he was suspended because the charges are directly related to his fiduciary responsibility.
Charello’s lawyer said his client denies any wrongdoing.

Obtaining more that $500, making it a felony. The exact amount has not been disclosed, to my knowledge.
I wondered why this said $500 and it was on the news. I heard on TV it is $500,000. Good job you Turnto10 Freshmen.
i agree with all of you!! He should have to pay restitution… he should lose his job… he should lose his pension… but he’s still a good guy personally.. haha!!
Bottom line…if he did it, he’s a thief.

loripb7563, just joking with you a little about the semantics, though the topic is not funny at all. I know how hard it is to know someone personally, and then have something like this to deal with.
Tbone, my point exactly. Restitution maybe?
I would rather call him a ‘nice person who allegedly is bilking the citizens of NP for his own gain’ for now. While we argue about the terms used to describe this thief, in the private sector anyone who typically falsifies their hours worked and collects pay, gets FIRED, PERIOD. Having said that, if he is found guilty, his pension should be revoked for not having served honorably. This is the level of ethics that I expect from our public employees.
Sorry lor but, for me, the separation of those isn’t possible. But I concede that he might be a nice guy; he may just be a great guy, if he is not convicted.
alkeryia… how bout this.. ethically he’s not such a great guy. But personally he is. How’s that? ![]()
