BRISTOL, R.I.—Two animal shelters on the East Bay are caring for several cats that were left abandoned at their doorsteps.

Six cats were found in two plastic tubs that were left outside the Bristol Animal Shelter. The cats were left sometime between 10 p.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. Monday.  Small holes were punched in the plastic to give the cats air.

Five more cats were discovered at the Warren shelter.

Diane Gibree, the Bristol animal control supervisor, said the cats were oxygen deprived, infested with fleas and saturated in urine.

The cats have been quarantined. They are on antibiotics.

Officials don’t know who left the cats.

“What they did was cruel. The conditions of these animals are unacceptable, and it’s criminal,“ Gibree said.

Animal control officials said it would be at least a month until the cats are ready for adoption.

Overall it’s nothing more than negligent, and placing inadequately sized holes is just plain dumb.

The lack of prosecution with animal cruelty cases, specifically those involving cats, is unacceptable.

...even though they don’t know who’s responsible in this case.

Probably another hoarder who realized that they could no longer afford to keep these animals.  Hopefully, they have surrendered ALL of the cats they have before any further lack of care. The owner needs help, not prosecution. At least they are still alive even though the previous owner did not provide adequate ventilation in the containers or good care.  I would not want to be in the owners residence if this is the condition of these animals.  However, it beats animals being left behind in forclosed homes without food and water.  There is a real crime!

I’m sorry but if they waive the fee every time how would the local shelthers stay open. How would they pay for there medical treatment. It was wrong to abandon their pets like that. I’m sorry but they should make a law that every animal should be micro-chipped there probaly would be less abandonments because they would be able to trace back to the owner. Please if you would like to help and if you can’t adopted a cat, make a small donation even one dollar goes a long way. There medical bill will reach over five hundred dollars at both shelters maybe more or less.

I saw this story on your 6PM newscast. I have to say at least someone tried to leave the cats where they would be found and cared for. Perhaps the air holes were inadequate, and the length of time the cats were left was too long, but I have to think that the intention was to help. They could have just dumped them in the woods. It might be wise to encourage people to not abandon animals and waive the fee for bringing animals in to a shelter, if the rescuer cannot afford it.
