PROVIDENCE—Rhode Island Gov. Don Carcieri is supporting a proposal by mayors of seven cities and towns to share municipal services.
Carcieri said Friday the proposal was a “step in the right direction,“ especially in light of the state’s financial struggles.
Providence Mayor David Cicilline said during a taping of “10 News Conference” last week that leaders of six other communities have discussed regionalizing police, fire and public works departments as a way to cut costs.
The other municipalities are East Providence, Cranston, Johnston, North Providence, Pawtucket and Central Falls.
The idea would require General Assembly approval.
Meanwhile, a newly formed state Senate commission has scheduled a hearing Tuesday to discuss the concept of shared municipal services.

If everyone, not only municipalities could learn to share, we would not be in the financial pickle we are all in. That is how our ancestors survived the great depression.
