PROVIDENCE—Gov. Don Carcieri plans to nominate tax official Gary Sasse to lead the state Department of Administration.

Carcieri said Wednesday that Sasse has spent three decades analyzing fiscal policies, experience that will be helpful as the state faces a deep recession and massive budget deficits.

Sasse has served as director of the Department of Revenue since last January. His nomination will be subject to approval from the state Senate.

Carcieri earlier picked Sasse to lead a panel that will recommend changes to the state’s tax code. He previously directed the Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council.

If confirmed, Sasse would replace Jerome Williams, who is leaving the Department of Administration next month to become a senior vice president at Roger Williams University in Bristol.
