PROVIDENCE—Rhode Island is lowering flags to half-staff in remembrance of 13 people killed by a gunman during a rampage at Fort Hood in Texas.
Gov. Don Carcieri announced Friday that the state and national flags will remain at half-staff until sundown at Veterans Day on Wednesday.
Investigators are still trying to determine why Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, allegedly opened fire at the the largest active duty armored post in the United States. A civilian police officer shot Hasan, ending the shooting spree. He remained in a coma Friday. (Read related story.)
Hasan was among 30 people wounded in the attack.
It was not immediately clear whether any of the victims of the Fort Hood attack had Rhode Island ties.
