PROVIDENCE—Cape Verde’s prime minister wants closer ties between Rhode Island College and the University of Cape Verde.

Prime Minister Jose Maria Pereira Neves toured RIC on Friday afternoon and said he hopes the two schools can exchange research, literature and faculty. He will visit the University of Rhode Island on Monday, which already sends students to Cape Verde to study.

A member of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde, Neves was designated prime minister of the island chain off West Africa when his party won legislative elections in 2001. He won a second term in 2005.

The uninhabited islands were discovered in the 15th century and became a Portuguese colony. Cape Verde won its independence in 1975.
