Thanks for showing us the working area of the station - wow, scanners, computers - LOL - I wish I’d had a set-up like that when I was working at WNRI am 1380 radio in Woonsocket 15 years ago. I got to work at 4:30 am. My first newscast was at 5:00 am, and was simulcast on Cox cable. Here’s how high tech I was - I listened to other radio news on the way in, and picked up the Providence Journal and the Woonsocket Call. Then I would put the tiny black and white TV in the corner of my booth on channel 10. That was it. No scanners, no ticker-tape, no PCs. Just a typewriter, and scotch tape to tape the newspaper stories I cut out to my on-air “script”. I gave credit to the papers for the big stories of course, but I just winged it on the little ones. Then I would frantically mix the stories around and re-edit them, so I would have a “fresh” newscast a half hour later. I broadcast from 5 to noon every day, every half hour, and in between I would answer the phones, run the camera equipment, dash to the production room to tape the weather and traffic reports (and make a commercial or two), and during my “free” moments, banter with the talk show host in the main studio. Occasionally someone would call in a tip - and wondered why I didn’t high-tail it out of there and grab the story for my next newscast. After the noon broadcast, I recorded a newscast to be played every hour until the “real” news person came in at 3:30, after his job teaching school. And then, for my finale, I sat down in the main studio to host a talk show of my own from 1:00 to 2:00pm.
It was fun.
My son earned more money when he worked at McDonald’s.
Have a great day, Dan! Glee Violette
