Bristol County sheriff stops paying some bills
Published: April 21, 2009
NEW BEDFORD, Mass.—The Bristol County Sheriff’s Department has stopped paying its medical and utility bills because it is running out of money.
Sheriff Thomas Hodgson told The Standard-Times of New Bedford that if the department paid its bills, it would not have enough money to pay salaries.
Hodgson estimates his $41.34 million budget for the fiscal year that ends June 30 will be depleted by May 21. He blames the state for underfunding the department.
Bristol County Treasurer Kevin Finnerty has an even bleaker prediction. He thinks the money will be gone by May 14, perhaps earlier.
Hodgson said the department has just more than $2 million in outstanding bills, including $1.4 million owed to Correctional Medical Care, which provides medical services to inmates.

Well first how much does that boat the Sheriff bought with taxpayers money cost and how much does it cost to dry dock it or whatever they do to maintain it and take care of it, owning a regular boat is,nt cheap these dat and I don’t no if any inmates have escaped trying to swim across the taunton river and he has that CSI Crime Lab on wheels he bought and has to maintain and there has to be other toys somewhere under his cap. He thinks he is Sheriff Judge Jury, Police dept, Legal lawyer, and everthing else in this county, I’ll make my point now, who was the sheriff before Dillinger?(Hogdson) does anyone no and how many riots and rebuilding had to be taken from the taxpayers ,with Hogdson well we,ve had a few and maybe a million or so in repairs in a matter of 2 maybe 3 years and all the money he had to give back to the inmates familys the citizens don’t no about because of his stupidity by trying to ilegally charge them foran asprin.
