Boy’s stolen wheelchair replaced

PROVIDENCE - A Rhode Island family has come through to donate a specialized wheelchair almost exactly like the one stolen from a Providence boy earlier this week.

The chair belonging to 4-year-old special needs student D’Mauri Bonds was taken from in front of his family’s home on Monday morning. The boy’s mother left the $2,800 wheelchair there for only a few minutes while she went upstairs to get her son, who cannot walk or talk.

She says her insurance would not replace it.

Gina and Scott Wallace of East Providence saw a television news report about the theft and on Thursday gave the Bonds family a similar wheelchair their 6-year-old son, Colby, had outgrown.

D’Mauri’s grandmother, Brenda Bonds, called the gift “awesome.“

Police are still looking for the thief.

A happy ending to a sad story. I hope they catch the scumbags that stole the wheelchair.

Leaving the chair unattended is something you can do in the suburbs, but not in the city. Hopefully she won’t leave it unattended again…
