PROVIDENCE—Providence police said a man held on suspicion of killing his live-in girlfriend had been issued a no-contact order after he was accused of assaulting her last year.
Police said 35-year-old David Tineo, who is also known as Johnny, is being held in New York City and is awaiting extradition to Rhode Island on a murder charge.
He’s accused in the death of his girlfriend, 34-year-old Ingrid Gonzalez, who was found dead in her Providence home at 573 Union Ave. on Sunday after police forced their way in. Police said a weapon was found in the home, but wouldn’t comment.
Gonzalez’s 17-year-old son was also in the home.
“When the police took him out, they had to carry him. He was devastated,“ Lisa Connor said. “She was a nice girl. She was outside, waving to everybody all the time. It’s just not something you think would happen.“
Police said there was a history of violence between Tineo and Gonzalez.
According to a police report, Tineo was arrested last December for allegedly choking Gonzalez with his hands, striking her several times with his fists and throwing her into a wall until she blacked out. He also said, ‘If you call the police, I’ll kill you’, according to the report.
Tineo pleaded not guilty to domestic assault and was released. According to police, a no-contact order was issued.
However, police said the couple continued to live together.
Gonzalez, a mother of two, had worked at a Providence hair salon for six years. Recently, she was cutting hair out of her home.
“She was a happy person and was very fun to be around. She was very talented. She did a really, good job. She used to cut everybody’s hair,“ Jaimie Figueroa said.
