Board takes back tuition waiver

About 75 students at Rhode Island’s three state colleges have lost their tuition waivers.

The waivers were granted to employees of the state Education Department and public television station WSBE, as well as their spouses and children.

This week, the Board of Governors for Higher Education rescinded that tuition waiver policy, citing the tough economic times.

The waivers totaled about $131,000.

This is SO WRONG on so many levels. The money saved might fund 2 full-time positions, at some level….compare this to the education of 75 people who could enter the work force better able to make a living, support a family, contribute to the economy.  This is definitely penny-wise and pound-foolish.
