Bill to sell marijuana in stores advances
Published: June 10, 2009
PROVIDENCE—The state Senate has approved a measure allowing some stores to sell medical marijuana.
They’re called “compassion centers.“ The state permitted medical patients to have marijuana for pain relief in 2006. But it never legalized the sale of the drug.
This bill would allow three non-profit, licensed stores to sell marijuana, but only to 680 patients registered with the state health department.
The measure is now headed to the governor’s desk. He has vetoed similar bills in the past.

wow you all are remarkably ignorant to the fact that marijuana is not a heavy drug in fact alcohol is worse and still yet is legal. alcohol destroys lives and families whens the last time you heard someone who took a few hits got violent or crashed their car while high? dur i know prescription pills that have worse side effects honestly just shut up and light up. The government fears things they cannot regulate , it does grow on trees, after all lol
Also, marijuana is not physically addicting. Even heavy smokers can quit without any significant physical side effects. It’s not like quitting cigarettes or heroine or something that is honestly physically addicting.
Sorry people. Please educate yourselves. While cannabis may contain some carcinogens, there are zero cases of cancer attributed solely to marijuana (don’t take my word for it - do the research yourself) - NONE. Claims to the contrary are fallacious, especially baseless claims that marijuana causes cancer “worse than cigarettes”. There are a grand total of ZERO deaths directly attributed to marijuana use.
According to the American Thoracic Society in 2006, even heavy marijuana smokers were not found to have an increased risk of cancer.
However it has been shown to have legitimate medicinal uses such as increasing one’s appetite and alleviating nausea associated with chemo therapy. Like I said, please educate yourselves people. Let go of the propaganda and look at the facts (and don’t just take my word for it, look it up - but make sure you find unbiased resources).
Dear Powertenor, you didn’t read what I wrote. This’s person’s cancer was CAUSED by his addiction to marijuana. Tell him that he should just start smoking it again so that he can eat while it causes his death.
I am sorry for your S.O.‘s difficulty, but it’ really about the greatest good for the most people. If you have experienced the awful side effects from conventional chemo, you would have realized that Medical MJ would enable people to eat and maintain their weight and strength through the treatments. This is essential for survival.
They want to do it for one reason the source of TAX MONEY !
These polititions would sell Heroin it they thought they could get away with it .

Why has no one considered the very strong possibility that “medical” marijuana will increase the medical problems of the ill. I have a loved one in his 40’s who has throat & neck cancer caused by pot. The treatment was like something out of a horror movie. They made a fiberglass mask of his head; and while he received 5 weeks M-F of radiation, they bolted his head in the mask to a table for 45 minutes at a time. Between that and chemo, he lost 60 lbs. and now, months later, still has difficulty eating. Pot causes cancer-worse than cigarettes. What are you thinking? Would you want to go through this?
