WAKEFIELD, R.I.  - The arraignment of a North Kingstown man accused of killing a gas station attendant with his car and shooting a police officer has been postponed.

David Catalano was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Washington County Superior Court, but court officials say that has been delayed as the sides wrangle over whether he is competent to stand trial.

A new date has not been scheduled.

The state Department of Mental Health has determined that Catalano is competent, but his lawyers have requested new evaluations.

Catalano faces various charges, including leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death for the May 17 crash that killed Clifford LeValley in East Greenwich.

Catalano then allegedly shot an officer who went to his home to investigate the death.
