Abandoned dog gets new leash on life

WARWICK, R.I.—A local Samaritan has rescued a dog, but the animal’s plight is far from over.

His name is Buddha and by all accounts the 6-month-old American Staffordshire terrier shouldn’t even be alive today, but he is thanks to Kevin Leo.

Their story starts the day after Thanksgiving.  Leo was leaving work at the West Shore Nursing Home.  Leo saw a woman with a dog, the animal had one of his legs bandaged up and he was hardly able to walk.

The woman told Leo she could no longer care for the dog and she was looking for a place to leave him. Leo took the dog, and right away started calling places for help.

Leo ended up at the 4 Paws Pet Resort and Animal Hospital on Warwick Avenue.

“This was the only place open and they were closing in 30 minutes and they were like how far are you? I’ll be there in 10 minutes,“ says Leo.

Buddha was in very bad condition, he had open sores all over his body and he was very thin.

He had a parasite that ate away at his skin and left him with no fur and he could barely walk. Despite his poor condition, veterinarian Darcie Lewis knew Buddha was not a lost cause.

“When I looked in his face, he looked at me with those eyes that said I’d really like to try to get better if you can help me,“ says Lewis.

They did help. Buddha is feeling much better now and he is getting regular skin treatments and eating well. Emaciated before, he’s gained 8 pounds and also gained a new lease on life with a companion who believes it was just meant to be.

“I always wanted a dog, never thought I’d get one this way, but I looked at him and I said I’m going to keep him, I’ll do whatever it takes,“ says Leo.

If you want to help with Buddha’s care, you can donate to a fund in his name at the 4 Paws Animal Medical Center.

Or you can help other animals like Buddha, whose owners need help caring for them by donating to Rhode Island’s Companion Animal Foundation.

I agree with Deb 100%.....sorry Meeko but if Mr. Leo is a “lier” as you claim (sorry I had to lol) than maybe you should nut up and do something about it.  But instead you sit on a local news message board and claim all of these things yet do nothing about it.  Perhaps you were not given much attention as a child, but this is a lousy way to go about getting it.  I’m sorry but either do something about it, or just go away attention wh-0-re.

Well, meeko12—-how do you expect Mr Leo to not have anything to do with that dog if you aren’t going to do anything to make that happen? If you have pictures and the like why don’t you stop this dog from being further abused. It’s fine to make claims of fraud—put your “money where your mouth is” and please restore my faith in mankind. Thanks.

Nope no grudge. He is a lier. He purchased this puppy from someone he works with. I know this person very well. This person is the owner of the puppy’s parents. We all have plenty of pics to prove it. Not very smart Mr. Leo. I hope you feel good inside robbing the average person of their hard earned money for your donations. you need not to ever have anything to do with that dog again. It will live longer.

No Meeko that is not all that matters. You are making claims here be a Man/Woman whatever and stand up. Make a report. If what you are saying is true you should be ashamed of yourself for not speaking up before all this came about. I hope what you are saying is not true. I’m hoping you are just someone with a grudge against him.

Meeko….Your just as guilty if you know that this is fraud and don’t speak up!  So I hope you can live with your guilt!  If you know that this is fraud for a fact…speak up to the authorities so they can investigate and make sure this dog gets a better life than the poor thing has had thus far! COWARD!

Meeko I hope you have proof of what you are saying. If you know it to be true why did you never make a phone call to report him? Why wait till now?

This is fraud. Mr. Leo has owned that dog since it was 8 weeks old.
