MIDDLETOWN, R.I.—The Potter League for Animals’ animal shelter and education center on Monday was recognized for its energy efficient design.

The building was certified as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold building.

It’s the only animal shelter in the country and the first Rhode Island building to be LEED certified at the Gold level.

The building was completed in November 2008.

The shelter can house up to 188 animals and provides shelter for animals from Portsmouth, Middletown and Newport.

The green building includes drought-tolerant landscaping, the use of renewable materials like radiate pine and bamboo. The rubber floor is made from recycled tires.
