BRIDGEPORT, Conn.—Bridgeport officials say smoke alarms did go off during a public housing complex fire that killed a woman and her three young children, and the building was up to code.
Fire Chief Brian Rooney says neighbors who heard the alarms at the P.T. Barnum complex early Friday morning banged on the family’s door to try to get them to come out. The door was locked, and firefighters had to break a window to get in.
The woman and her 4-year-old twin daughters were found in the living room, and her 5-year-old son was located in a second-floor bedroom.
Authorities say 22-year-old Tiana Black and her children died after unsuccessful efforts to revive them. The Connecticut Post identified the children as her son, Nyshon Williams, and twin daughters Nyasija and Tyasija Williams.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
