JOHNSTON, R.I.—Police say speed was likely a factor in the rollover that killed two women Tuesday and critically injured a third.
The three babies in the vehicle are all said to be recovering. Police say all three adults were thrown from vehicle when it flipped on Interstate 295 in Johnston just before 3 p.m.
State police say while the children were fastened in the car properly but it appears the adults were not wearing seat belts.
The two front seat passengers who died were apparently cousins from Rhode Island.
The third woman, who is in critical condition, was riding in the third row seat with her 8-month-old daughter. Two boys, ages 1 and 2, and the 8-month-old girl were all strapped into their car seats and survived with minor injuries. They were treated at a hospital and released to their fathers.
No names were immediately released.
Rescue crews from North Providence, Warwick, Cranston and Johnston reported to the accident.
Witnesses said the driver lost control of the SUV and the vehicle rolled over several times. The SUV landed upside down.
The accident remains under investigation.

I saw one woman who must have been in her late sixties doing about 90mph with half of her car in the break down lane!
correction, the slowest people should be in the farthest Right lane if more than 2 lanes.
Hey “not needed”
They are plenty of boys/men that speed too and probably more often than women/girls. Second if you are in the high speed (aka passing lane) and people are passing you on the right, then you need to stop traveling in the high speed lane and move over. I’m sick of people traveling in the left hand lane when they can clearly move to the right lane for traveling. The left lane is for passing, the right lane is for traveling and the slowest people should be in the furthest left lane (if more than 2 lanes). Also, People had better start using their turn signal (aka Blinker) when changing lanes. It’s not an option to use it, IT IS REQUIRED BY LAW! So many drivers need to go back to Driver’s Ed and learn the rules of the road again.
I know. I can’t believe how fast women drive these days!
This is awful but I can tell you I drive 95 south everyday and I am AMAZED at how many women/girls drive 85 mph passing me when I am in the high speed lane - I wouldn’t drive that fast with my dog in the car never mind a kid!
Let this be a horrible lesson speed does kill. Very sad. Thank god the children were not hurt!
I travel 295 every day and morning. Since there isnt much backup during rush hour people fly down at dangerous speeds at dangerous times.
It boggles my mind how recklessly people shoot down the highway. They have that impatient smirk on their face and do whatever they can to get in front of YOU. Its so frustrating to watch, my first reaction is to block them in or gesture or something, but if anything, that just creates more potential for someone to get hurt.
I see cops sitting on the side of the road off and on, but I don’t see anymore unmarked cars pulling people over. I don’t know if the budget was cut or not, but those cars need to be patrolling, its like Mad Max Road Warriors out there.
I wish there was an effective way to report reckless drivers and have them intercepted or punished quickly. I followed a heavily intoxicated driver on 295 one morning, he had already crashed into some bushes and LITERALLY branches were hanging off his front bumper. I had to be connected to 3 different police departments and follow him off the highway before he was stopped.
So many people think it can’t happen to THEM. But it does, it just happened to a group of women and children.

I haven’t any problem with you either, this “careful” person just feels the need to create issues between those he/she does not know.
But anyway, I do hope those poor little babies recover fully…
Such a sad story…
Horric tragedy that possibly could have been avoided with seat belts. I don’t understand why people don’t wear them.
Careful: Why are you picking on me? I have no issues with either you or Get off My Lawn as far as I know. Please leave me out of your petty arguments.
I agree with Joyce2. Wear your seatbelt. Even though it’s now a law, it’s still a choice, as is speeding. Life isn’t a Steve McQueen movie. It’s not cool to be dead. Nor is it a free unbridled feeling to be paralyzed. The wind can still whip through your hair while you have a belt on.
