PROVIDENCE -- Providence police are increasing their public presence in the wake of several violent crimes.

On Tuesday, the rank-and-file held roll call outdoors at the corner of Eastwood and Webster avenues, just three houses from where a 17-year-old boy was shot and killed three weeks ago.

Police also said they arrested a man who was carrying a .22 caliber handgun in the same area. Investigators said it was the eighth gun the police have seized in the past week.

Col. Dean Esserman said the beefed up police presence, community outreach and outdoor roll call are all aimed at putting a stop to surging street violence.

Esserman said residents will see city officers, state troopers and FBI agents working together to crack down on gun crimes.
