NEWPORT, R.I. -- A plan to construct a $300 million hotel at the former Fort Adams barracks in Newport has been dropped.

The Newport Daily News says the proposal also included building a marina near the fort.

The developer is quoted as saying he could not overcome strong opposition by Third Ward Councilor Kathryn Leonard who represents the area around Fort Adams.
