PROVIDENCE -- The state medical examiner's office is blaming the death of a couple in their 80s on this week's record-setting heat wave in Rhode Island.

Police said 84-year-old Raymond Desjardins was discovered dead Wednesday in an apartment in Central Falls, where temperatures hit 102 degrees.

His wife, 86-year-old Rolande Desjardins, had collapsed and later died at a hospital.

On Friday, the medical examiner's office said the couple died from excessive overheating.

The couple's landlord told police he last saw Raymond Desjardins on Tuesday night when the elderly man complained about the heat.

The landlord said he offered to let the couple stay in his home where it was cooler, but Desjardins declined.
