NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - A high-level sex offender who recently moved to New Bedford has been arrested and charged with raping a 6-year-old boy in the public library.

New Bedford police allege that 26-year-old Corey Saunders assaulted the boy in a secluded corner of a second-floor magazine room.

The boy's mother was in another part of the library using a computer.

Police -- who say they have surveillance video taken from inside the library -- found Saunders outside a local homeless shelter a short time later.

The Level 3 sex offender was convicted in 2001 of child rape and assault and battery on a child. He spent four years behind bars on the 2001 conviction, completing his sentence in December 2006.

Despite efforts by the Bristol district attorney's office to keep Saunders in jail, a judge rejected arguments that he was sexually dangerous.
