Jamestown is located on Conanicut Island, the second largest island in Narragansett Bay. In 1638, the English used the island for grazing sheep and, by 1675, ferries brought people between Conanicut Island and Newport. In 1678, Jamestown was incorporated as a town with only 150 residents.
Little Compton originally belonged to the Wampanoag tribe and they called the area Sakonnet. In 1682, the town was incorporated by the Plymouth Colony and was renamed Little Compton. One little known fact of Little Compton is that it is the birthplace of the RI Red Hen.
Middletown is on Aquidneck Island and lies between Portsmouth and Newport, giving it its name "middle" town. It is known to have some of the best beaches in New England and is a popular summer destination. Some notable residents of Middletown include Nicolas cage and Charlie Day.
