JOHNSTON, R.I.—The 16th Annual Southern New England Giant Pumpkin Grower’s Annual Weigh-off will be held Saturday at Frerichs Farm in Warren.
One of the contenders comes from a farmer in Johnston.
Norman Gansert said he hopes his largest pumpkin will be a winner this weekend.
Gansert said it weighs about 1,200 pounds and measures 385 inches.
Gansert said for him, there’s more to the art of growing giant pumpkins than just size.
“I would prefer something more 800 pounds that looked like a pumpkin—nice color and shape—than something that was 1,200 (pounds) that looked like a blob,“ Gansert said.
Gansert’s pumpkin will be one of three to grace the White House lawn this Halloween.
The Wisconsin Giant Pumpkin Growers tapped him for the honor.
