The American Heart Association is calling for a drastic reduction in the amount of sugar in our diets.
A study in the journal “Circulation” finds the average American consumes 22 teaspoons of sugar each day.
The ideal amount according to the study is six teaspoons for women and nine for men.
The study takes aim at soda, with researchers calling it the top source of added sugar in the American diet.
Researchers also said there is no one food or food group to blame for the country’s obesity epidemic.
In a statement, the sugar association said it is “very disappointed” with the report, which infers a direct correlation between sugar intake and heart health, and noted that “very few of the cited references by the AHA are directly related to sugars and heart health impacts.“
The American Beverage Association said sugar-sweetened drinks do not pose a particular health risk.
