PROVIDENCE -- Mosquitoes trapped in Providence and Pawtucket last month have tested positive for West Nile Virus.

The state Department of Environmental Management announced the positive findings Wednesday.

They said the mosquitoes were found in three sample pools -- two in the Smith Hill section of Providence and another in the Woodlawn neighborhood in Pawtucket.

The DEM said it'll set additional mosquito traps in the areas where the positive samples were found.

Test results are still pending from an additional 104 mosquito pools trapped during the weeks of Aug. 18 and Aug. 25.

State officials said Rhode Islanders should take steps to protect themselves against mosquito bites.
