NEW BEDFORD, Mass. -- The New Bedford Board of Health reports that some mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile virus.

The mosquitoes were trapped at the Oak Grove Cemetery, and in the Washburn Street area. They're the type that can transmit the illness to humans.

The Bristol County Mosquito Control Board will do ground spraying Wednesday evening through Thursday morning, between 8 p.m. and 5.a.m., in the areas where the infected mosquitoes were found.

Residents in those areas are advised to keep their windows closed and stay indoors during that time. Additional mosquito trapping and testing will be done to determine the next step for reducing the mosquito population.

The best protection against West Nile virus is to avoid being bitten. Avoid going outdoors at dusk and dawn when the bugs are the most active. Wearing long sleeves and pants and using repellents that contain DEET will also help prevent bites.
