WOONSOCKET, R.I.—Students from the Woonsocket Area Career and Technical Center are building a ‘green’ house.
“This is about energy efficiency, green jobs and the future of construction and learning the skills that they need,“ said teacher Charlie Myers.
Students on Thursday inserted cellulose insulation into the home. The cellulose is made from 100 percent recycled paper and mixed with an anti-flame retardant. The insulation is damp sprayed into the walls.
“This is the greenest product you can use for insulation because it’s a recycled product and it works extremely well,“ Myers said.
The students also built solar panels for the roof.
“On a sunny day, they can actually have their electric meter spin backwards,“ Myers said.
The house on Front Street is the first earth advantage home constructed by students in the state.
The students began constructing the house last October and will host an open house on Nov. 4.
A family is scheduled to move into the home in mid-November.
