PC beats DePaul 83-74

by: Frank Carpano

The Friars beat DePaul in the opening round of the Big East Tournament 83-74. It was PC’s first win at this tournament since 2003.

The Friars will play again tomorrow against the tournament’s top seed, Louisville.

The Friars lost to the Cardinals at Louisville earlier this year. PC led that game by a point at the half. PC shot 75% in the first half. Commenting on their next game, PC coach keno Davis admitted: “It will take us playing a perfect game to beat Louisville

Keno also said that he wasn’t disappointed his team didn’t beat DePaul more decisively.
He said: “I’m happy we found a way to win. In every game this year where we haven’t playerd our best, I;’ve always been impressed with how we’ve found a way to dig down and found a way to win.

Stats:

PC:  Curry 25 pts (including 5 3-pointers)
      Efejuku 23 pts
      Xavier   13 pts

DePaul: Walker 31 pts (including 6 3-pointers)
          Tucker 30 pts

DePaul hit 13 of 31 3-point attempts
DePaul missed 8 of their 17 foul shots

ARE THE FRIARS IN THE NCAA’S?

After the DePaul game, Keno Davis said he thinks his team has done enough to be considered for the NCAA’s, but admits that the Friars are still on the bubble.

The win over DePaul gives the Friars 19 wins this season

Since the Big East was formed, 90 % of Big East teams with 19 wins have been invited to the NCAA tournament.

PC-DePaul 8 minutes to play second half

by: Frank Carpano

Frustration set in at the 8:32 mark when Friar coach Keno Davis was called for a technical foul. likely arguing a questionable out of bounds call by the officials

The Friars have been trying to get the ball inside. Weyinme is driving to the hoop, but they are waiting for him there.

The idea is to get to the foul line. But when they have, the Friars haven’t executed. They are shooting only 43% from the foul line

PCDePaul 12:00 minutes to go second half

by: Frank Carpano

I can’t believe that DePaul didn’t win a single conference game this season.

When the Friars have had success this season it was because they controlled the tempo of the game. That is missing today.

For whatever reason, PC hasn’t been able to consistently run on DePaul.

PC trails 55-53 with 10:32 to play

PC - DePaul 16:00 to go Second Half

by: Frank Carpano

In the first half, the Friars played up or down to the level of their competition. That’s happening again today.

Thank goodness for Sheraud Curry. He’s shooting lights out today. He already has 21 points.

at 14:22 to go, Randall Hanke’s layup tied the game at 45

PC-DePaul halftime

by: Frank Carpano

Very nice halftime ceremony to honor retiring Big East Coimmissioner Mike Tranghese. All of the Big East school Presidents and Athletic Directors were on the court to mark the contribution that Tranghese has made to the league. Mike was the league’s first fulltime employee back in 1979.

First half stats

High scorer for the Friars: Sheaud Curry with 16 points. Weyinmi Efejuko has 8

Will Walker leads DePaul with 13 points…

Rebounds:  PC 20 DePaul 19

Turnovers PC 7 DePaul 4

PC-DePaul First Half Review

by: Frank Carpano

The PC students are sitting behind the DePaul basket in the first half. Doing their best to help the Friars. Shouting and trying to distract the DePaul shooters.

Friars tied it at the foul line with 2:40 to go, before 2 BLue Demon 3’s pushed DePaul back into the lead

3 seconds to go in the first half   Sheraud Curry banked in a 3 pointer to give the Friars the lead 32-31 at the half.

I can only imagine the things Keno Davis will say to his team at the half…

Intensity seems to be missing. And perhaps they have underestimated DePaul

PC-DePaul 4:00 to go first half

by: Frank Carpano

Keno Daivs is quickly shuffling players in and out of the lineup, trying to spark his team

The halfcourt trap is starting to yield some dividends, 3 straight steals has brought the Friars back to within 1.

Tighter defense by the Friars has forced DePaul to take poor shots as the shot clock was winding down.

25-24 DePaul with 3:51 to play first half

PC-Depaul 8:00 to go first half

by: Frank Carpano

The Friars look out of synch. Sloppy ballhandling and poorly timed passes have seen them fall behind here in the first half…..22-16 with 7:45 to play
