Legendary Boston radio station WBCN is being squeezed out in a shake-up that will bring a new sports station to the FM dial.
CBS Radio said Tuesday it is going to launch a new sports radio station—98.5 The Sports Hub—on Aug. 13. The new station is expected to get the WBZ-FM call letters and will feature sports talk shows and play-by-play programming, the company said. It will also be the home of the New England Patriots and the Boston Bruins.
Adult contemporary station WBMX, now at 98.5 FM, will move to WBCN’s frequency of 104.1 FM and will be renamed Mix 104.
“WBCN will say goodbye to Boston listeners after 41 years on the air with unique programming and stories celebrating the history and heritage of the station,“ a news release said.
CBS said WBCN will continue to broadcast online and on 98.5 HD 2 for listeners with an HD Radio receiver.
